9 left in Irish Derby

A total of 9 will line up at The Curragh this weekend for the Dubai Duty Free Derby on Saturday spearheaded by Epsom Derby second Jack Hobbs for John Gosden.

Second to stable mate Golden Horn at Epsom and on a steep rise through the ranks the three year old is a short priced favourite to take the coveted prize and bring it back to the UK.

It’s not all about the colts in the race though as Pleascach and Qualify for Jim Bolger and Aidan O’Brien will bid to show the boys how it’s done after Classic success against their own sex this season in the 1000 Irish Guineas and the Epsom Oaks respectively.

Qualify getting an entry courtesy of the success at Epsom where her win gave her the entry to the Curragh showpiece which connections now seem keen to take up. Pleascach was beaten at Royal Ascot in the Ribblesdale but was talked about as an Irish Derby contender prior to that run with Jim Bolger suggesting it was more what he thought about the colts this year than his filly that encouraged him to enter.

O’Brien looks set to also saddle Giovanni Canaletto alongside Highland Reel and Kilimanjaro.

William Haggas will try to do better than at Epsom with Storm The Stars and Dermot Weld’s unbeaten Radanpour will be looking to step up in the feature and continue promising progress for the master handler under Pat Smullen.
