AP has two rides on final day
There will be just two rides for the retiring champ AP McCoy on Saturday at Sandown as he bows out from the sport aboard Mr Mole and the aptly named Box Office, both owned by JP McManus.
Mr Mole, trained by Paul Nicholls will run in the BET365 AP McCoy Celebration Chase and will face stiff competition from Special Tiara, Sprinter Sacre and others in what looks a very competitive field of seven declared, due off at 3.15pm.
Should the tricky chaser not be successful under AP then it will be down to another McManus owned runner, this time trained by Jonjo O’Neill, Box Office to hopefully bring home a fairytale finish to what has been a career that will surely never be surpassed in terms of winners, longevity at the top and importance to the sport.
Box Office will go in the 4.25pm BET365 Handicap Hurdle and having been sent over from France this season looks to have a decent chance. Indeed he was sent off favourite for the Fred Winter Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham in March where the four year old finished 7th of 22 after being backed from 12/1 into 13/2 at the off.
Emotions are sure to run high at a sell out event for the track and clerk of the course at Sandown Andrew Cooper is looking forward to it.
“We’re completely sold out having reached that point yesterday. There is no point anybody turning up on the day and we’re looking at a crowd in the region of 18,000. There will be lots of things going on and hopefully it will be a great send off. The presentation of his champion jockey trophy will be made before the A P McCoy Celebration Chase and we will be honoring and reflecting throughout the day.” he told television station ATR.
Those well wishes are flowing already across social media with the hashtag #ThanksAP already popular and sure to be trending on Saturday afternoon.
