Awesome American Pharoah is Crowned
The awesome American Pharoah created history yesterday evening by landing a Triple Crown in America with the final leg at Belmont Park in the Grade1 Belmont Stakes under Victor Espinoza for trainer Bob Baffert and now takes a seat at the very top table in USA racing history.
Not since Affirmed has the feat been achieved although thirteen previous hype machines had arrived in New York with the Crown within grasp only to fail at the final stretch.
The Kentucky Derby, followed by the Preakness Stakes and then the Belmont Stakes is the task that has now been completed and it was done in great style with a move to lead at the final bend and power away for an authoritative 5 lengths romp to huge celebrations from the almost 100,000 strong crowd in the New York heat.
Baffert couldn’t believe it once the dream was finally realised “He’s just a great horse and I felt good about him. I knew he was training well but you’ve got to have the horse. Down the backside I knew if he was a great horse, he was gonna do it. And he’s a great horse. I feel like I have a very special horse and he’s the one that won it, not me.”
Jockey Espinoza had failed before aboard Crown challengers “The third time is the charm!”
“I can only tell you it’s an amazing feeling and he’s an unbelievable horse. I came here with a ton of confidence, more than the last two times, I said, I hope American Pharoah feels like me……and he did!
