Bolger strikes with Pleascach
A right back to form run from Godolphin’s Irish trained Pleascach saw the early season 1000 Guineas winner in Ireland claim a last strides success in the Group 1 Darley Yorkshire Oaks this afternoon.
Irish Oaks winner Covert Love was bidding to dominate the field under Pat Smullen in similar tactics to her victory at The Curragh on her last start but she gave way in the closing stages as a determined Kevin Manning drove his mount to the front to win for trainer Jim Bolger.
Kevin Manning was delighted with the battling qualities shown by Pleascach who probably needed a short break to fire again and she did just that to reel in the bang in form Hugo Palmer stable star.
“She battled all the way to the line and she’s done it very well. I thought she ran a little bit flat the last day and didn’t run up to scratch. I thought she was back to her best when I rode her work last week. She goes on various types of ground and is a very talented filly.”
Jim Bolger was full of praise for Manning too who got it right on the day. “Previously we tried to settle her a little bit and it meant breaking her stride and Kevin decided whatever happened he wasn’t going to break her stride today. He gave her a beautiful ride and we knew she was at the top of her game coming here.
“We’ll have to see how she comes out of this, but maybe something at Longchamp like the Prix de l’Opera.”
