Colonel gives Hughes an emotional first Grade 1
Lieutenant Colonel gave Sandra Hughes a first Grade 1 success since taking over the reigns from her sadly departed father Dessie, coming out on top in what was a dramatic Bar One Racing Hatton’s Grace Hurdle. Sandra had enjoyed her first victory on Saturday and just 24 hours later she recorded this emotional first success at the highest level.
There was drama abound in the Grade 1 contest, with warm favourite Zaidpour falling, bringing down King Of The Picts and hampering Jetson in the process. Front runner Little King Robin had again set out to make it a stern test of stamina but Lieutenant Colonel always travelled well under Bryan Cooper and took control of the race before the second last.
Cooper was made to shake up his mount but they were always holding a rallying Jetson who would finish second, with the gallant Little King Robin back in third.
Speaking to At The Races, Hughes said: “It’s been an emotional 24 hours, but I have to say everyone has been brilliant.
“We got a great reception but that was for Dad. He put all of the groundwork in with these horses. We’ve got a wonderful team at home with Rob Hennessy and I’m just part of the operation.
“The horses have been in good form and we thought he would run very, very well. He ran in a beginners’ chase first time and was a bit disappointing, so we decided to come back to hurdles with him.”
