Cursory Glance gives Atzeni first Royal Ascot win
Cursory Glance was a 14/1 winner of the Albany Stakes, giving jockey Andrea Atzeni his first ever Royal Ascot winner and providing trainer Roger Varian with his first victory of the week in the Group 3 contest. A winner of an ordinary Kempton maiden on the all-weather last month, Cursory Glance took a huge step forward on just her second racecourse start, coming from off the pace to run out a comfortable 2 length winner from American raider Sunset Glow.
It was the American raider that was quickest away from the stalls and having been immediately sent to the head of affairs by Victor Espinoza, set a decent pace and still looked to be travelling the best approaching the final furlong. Espinoza surprisingly delayed his kick for home as his rivals began to struggle and in doing so allowed Cursory Glance, under a patient ride from Atzeni, to pick him up before the line. The well backed joint favourite Patience Alexander was a further neck back in third.
“She is a very nice filly, it is great for the owner,” Varian said afterwards. “I have been saying earlier in the week that Friday and Saturday were going to be our bigger days, and now they came we had to produce.
“But thankfully, she’s one of our better ones, she’s come along so well. This is only her second start, but she behaved well here today, she’s come on a lot after her run at Kempton.”
Atzeni added: “She wasn’t the quickest out of the stalls but she travelled really well. The American horse seemed to be getting away from me but she stayed well. She’s a really nice filly.”
