Dettori laughing on “joke” ground at Sandown

On the first day of a very special two day meeting at Sandown Frankie Dettori grabbed the headlines and set the scene for AP McCoy tomorrow as he rode four winners on the afternoon despite concerns about over watered ground.

A 617/1 four timer was completed aboard Jack Hobbs for John Gosden who now enters the Investec Derby picture as he blew away the opposition in the finale and trainer and jockey were suitably impressed from the twice raced colt.
Gosden “You see why he’s only run once, in December, big rangy boy. He’s a lovely, progressive horse and we’ll see where he goes from here. I did put him in the Dante, so that is an option. He’s a well balanced horse, so we’ll see. He’s a nice type of horse to have.”

Western Hymn, also trained by Gosden took the Gordon Richards Stakes whilst Dettori added further winners aboar Mutarakez and Brandybend on another rewarding day for the jockey.

Trainer Charlie Hills ran his well regarded Commemorative in the Classic Trial on the card which was won by Master Apprentice for Andrew Balding and David Probert who is not considered an Epsom horse by connectons, but Hills’ charge failed to fire despite being sent off at odds on.

Obviously disappointed that the ground did not ride as described he labelled the flat track a joke and suggested he will avoid the meeting in the future. Reported in the Racing Post – Hills “We won’t be bringing nice horses to this meeting again. It’s a joke.”

It’s a challenge to host both codes at the track over two days of course and there are cross over areas which would have different levels of use – hopefully lessons learnt and mother nature will not add to the watering overnight allowing for fresh ground tomorrow for what promises to be a highly entertaining and emotional day with a packed house and a very special jockey bowing out from a phenomenal career at the top. #ThanksAP
