Emma-Jayne Wilson lands one for the Girls
The Girls enjoyed their second winner of the afternoon when the James Fanshawe-trained Missed Call captured the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Challenge in the hands of captain Emma-Jayne Wilson.
Missed Call tracked the pace on the rail and was produced with her run as the field straightened for home.. She took the lead over a furlong out and held off the fast-finishing Elbereth and Graham Lee (GB & IRE) by a short head. Barwick and Yutake Take (ROW) were half a length further back in third.
Wilson, riding her third winner at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, commented: “It was a fantastic effort. She was travelling real nice behind the pace and the boss said that she had a bit of a short run and I should go when she’s running. We cruised on up the inside of Pat Smullen and she was on the steel until I asked her. There is a break away rail here which we don’t have at home and that gives you a bit more confidence that you are going to get a clear run.
“We fought all the way to the line and I had absolutely no idea that I had won. I judge it a little better at a track that I know a little better now but I knew that it was close. I head the cheer of the crowd galloping out – I hadn’t seen the photo but I was sure based on everybody’s reaction that we had got the job done. I know we have a lot of people pulling for the girls team.
“We are out here having a good time, showcasing these amazing animals and let these people watch it and enjoy it as much as I do. I wish everybody in the stands could experience what I experience right here.”
Winning owner Malcolm Denmark added: “Emma-Jayne gave Missed Call such a fantastic ride. My first impression when we were booked Emma is that I didn’t know too much about her, but hey she can come over and ride for me anytime!
“We tried Missed Call over a mile and six furlongs last time and we didn’t want to make too much use of her. What she actually needs is to be ridden handy and the drop in trip helped her today.”
