Faydhan unlikely for Guineas

John Gosden stated that Faydhan would be a “lovely horse for Royal Ascot time” rather than tackling the 2000 Guineas next month at Newmarket after his reappearance this afternoon saw him finish third behind Home Of The Brave in the European Free Handicap at the same venue.

The bookmakers have eased the colt from 9/2 second fav to a general 10/1 chance for the first colt classic of the season but Gosden will concentrate efforts elsewhere now. “He’ll tell us after his next work whether he’s heading for the Jersey or heading for the St James’s Palace”.

The winner was part of a super double for trainer Hugo Palmer at the venue this afternoon and Home Of The Brave was impressive in his success always moving comfortably for James Doyle and whilst some bookmakers reacted positively in terms of early classic glory others remained unimpressed and 33/1 remains available for a potential return in May to be a successful one.

In the fillies showpiece of the day, the Nell Gwyn Stakes, it was Richard Hannon’s Osaila who came home in front under Frankie Dettori but had to battle hard for the win prevailing by a narrow margin over Hugo Palmer’s New Providence, the winner now a general 16/1 chance for the 1000 Guineas.

Dettori was impressed enough. “She is a good filly who did it well considering where she was drawn. She needs a mile and will be well suited by the 1,000 Guineas.”
