Fifth win in a row for impressive Custom Cut
Custom Cut brought his winning run to five in the Group 2 Shadwell Joel Stakes, making light work of a step up in class to score yet again under Daniel Tudhope. Having been victorious in Listed and Group 3 company this summer, this was another step up the ladder for David O’Meara’s 5yo but he keeps on improving and, more importantly, keeps on winning.
O’Meara’s charge started his winning sequence in Listed company at Windsor back in June and has since gone on to score at Pontefract, Leopardstown and York, the last two of which were in Group 3’s. This is not the first time that Custom Cut has racked up a sequence of victories in his career, he also won four in a row in Ireland when trained by George Kent in 2012 but he has moved to a new level since joining his current trainer at the start of the current campaign.
He was again returned to front running tactics today under a confident Tudhope and despite eventual runner-up Captain Cat looking a threat at one stage, Custom Cut had plenty left in the locker and went clear again to score by 2 1/2 lengths. Hors De Combat was a further 1 1/4 lengths back in third.
“I think this track suited, he got into a nice relaxed rhythm,” said Tudhopeof the winner. “Two and half out they were coming, but he saved a bit and he wasn’t going to lie down
“He’s improved all year, David’s done a great job and it’s fantastic for the team. He’s versatile groundwise – Leopardstown was soft, and I held him up that day too. Possibly there’s a Group One in him.”
