Final runner for Clive Brittain at Newbury
Retiring trainer Clive Brittain saddles a final runner in a stellar training career at Newbury although he will not be present at the track this afternoon.
Acclio runs at 4.45 for Brittain and would be a fitting end should she be able to win the Fillies Handicap for the 81 year old trainer who has been saddling up runners to major success since 1972. Brittain will be with his wife Maureen as the curtain comes down on a much loved man and career at the top end of Racing.
As quoted in the Racing Post.
“I think Acclio has got a chance,” said the trainer. “It is the right race to run her in and she acts on softish ground. I won’t be there though. It is more important that I’m with Maureen.”
The Racing Post also provided some fitting tributes…..
He’s an example to us all. He did it from nothing and is a real inspiration. If I train half as many Group 1 winners as he has I’ll be perfectly happy.
Clive is a top man. He had a wonderful career and Maureen and he were a wonderful team. With his happy-go-lucky demeanour it was easy to underestimate what a formidable trainer he was.
I owe Clive everything because he gave me my first chance and I rode a winner for him. I walked into his yard at 17 and he gave me a chance when my dad wouldn’t. I’m very fond of Clive and Maureen.
