Free Eagle ready for next step at Ascot
Free Eagle is ready to put his growing reputation on the line in the Qipco Champion Stakes at Ascot later in the month. Trainer Dermot Weld has confirmed that his impressive High Chaparral colt is on target for his first step in to Group 1 company, where he could line up against the likes of Australia, Cirrus Des Aigles and The Grey Gatsby.
Free Eagle started his career with a 5 1/2 length demolition of a decent maiden field at Leopardstown in August last year, but could not get near Australia in the Group 3 Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Turf Trial next time out. He was subsequently let off for the rest of the year but made quite an impression on his return at Leopardstown last month with a seven length victory in a Group 3.
“He’s in good form, I’m pleased with him and the Champion Stakes looks the logical way to go with him,” Weld told At The Races.
“He’s a very talented colt and please god we’ll keep him right for his next race.”
On the matter of whether Free Eagle would stay in training next season Weld said: “If everything goes well and he comes out of his next race okay, that would be the plan.”
