Gilgamboa the star of the show at Limerick
Enda Bolger’s Gilgamboa put in an extremely impressive performance to take the Grade 2 Shannon Airport Novice Chase at his local track at Limerick. The J.P McManus owned 6yo, a winner on his chasing debut at Navan last month, gave a big boost to his Arkle chances with an assured round of jumping under Mark Walsh.
Sent off the well supported 7/4 favourite, Bolger’s charge was happy to sit in off the pace from the off, with main market rival Adriana Des Mottes travelling upsides. With their rivals starting to fade away, Willie Mullins’ mare, receiving lumps of weight, went to the front under Danny Mullins but Gilgamboa was still travelling supremely well and joined the leader approaching the second last.
He had eased to the front before the last and having put in another terrific leap, looked back to see Adriana Des Mottes sprawled out on the ground after a bad mistake. Mullins’ second runner Perfect Gentleman eventually came through for 2nd but Gilgamboa was home and hosed by this staged having been eased down by Walsh.
The winner was given shortened to 8/1 for the Arkle in the aftermath.
Bolger said afterwards: “That’s a nice Christmas present! He’s a very exciting and improving horse and jumping is his forte.
“It is nice to build on his win at Navan and he’s getting very professional. He is very relaxed and settled and the Arkle Chase at Leopardstown could be next for him.”
