Goodwood: Bow Creek makes all in Celebration Mile
Bow Creek recorded his first victory at Group level with a hard fought front running effort in the Doom Bar Celebration Mile at Goodwood. Bow Creek is your typical Mark Johnston trained horse, a strong traveller, hard as nails and blessed with a fantastically game attitude, as shown here in the Group 2 contest.
As most of Johnston horses do, Bow Creek shot from the gates to take the lead early under Joe Fanning. Having galloped strongly through the race, the pair were still at the head of affairs at the two pole where Fanning kicked for home, catching his rival jockeys off guard. Bow Creek went clear in an instant and despite hanging badly late on, had enough to beat 66/1 outsider Emell by 1 1/2 lengths.
It was a great ride by Fanning, who is enjoying one of his most successful seasons, but in truth a case can be made that it was a poor effort from Fanning’s weigh-room colleagues, particularly James Doyle on the 9/4 favourite Captain Cat who was given far too much to do.
Winning trainer Johnston said: “Ryan Moore said he veered left in the Britannia at Ascot, we worked our horses on the track at Ascot so perhaps he knew where the gate was. I don’t know what happened this time, but he’d have obviously won very well if he hadn’t done it.
“He’s had big entries before, we’ve thought about it, but he’s in the QEII. Now he’s won a Group Two, I suppose we’ll have to go for it.”
