Goodwood: Ivawood an impressive winner in Richmond
Ivawood was a visually impressive winner of the Qatar Bloodstock Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, as the Richard Hannon-trained colt proved far too strong for his rivals in the Group Two.
Sent off the highly fancied 2-5 favourite, under Richard Hughes the son of Zebedee was soon dictating matters and travelled easily the best throughout the race.
A potent turn of foot a furlong out sealed the race and he stormed clear to win by four and a half lengths, taking his unbeaten record to three. Louie De Palma finished back in second with Jungle Cat another neck away in third place.
Ivawood provided trainer Richard Hannon with his first winner of the Goodwood festival and was cut from 16-1 to 8-1 in places for next year’s 2,000 Guineas.
Winning jockey Hughes said: “He’s got everything, really.
“He looks like him (Toronado) and he stays like him. He’s ahead of the other two-year-olds at the moment.”
Hannon added: “It’s nice to get one on the board as we’ve hit the crossbar a few times this week.
“We’ll look at the Morny (Deauville) and the Dewhurst (Newmarket), races like that. We’ll treat him as a Guineas horse and work back from there. He’s got the speed for six (furlongs) and will get seven in time.”
