Goonyella too strong in Midlands National….
Stamina sapping conditions and a marathon trip have been the requirement for Jim Dreaper trained Goonyella since he set foot on the racecourse and with the conditions aligned and the assistance of one of the most promising young jockeys in the game the 8yo had way too much power for rivals at Uttoxeter this afternoon.
JJ Burke was patient and careful for two circuits, keeping the stayer in space over his fences and close enough to the pace before pushing him out to lead at the third last and dominate the closing stages before being driven out after the last to win by 9 lengths from fellow Irish raider Raz De Maree who got a typical Paul Carberry ride to pick up good prize money in second place.
Dreaper’s son Tom was in attendance and quickly ruled out the Aintree Grand National ” we simply will not get in this year so we will be thinking of Punchestown providing he is ok. The trip could not be far enough for him and every drop of rain that fell this week has been the difference.”
“Jonny Burke is a super jockey and he could claim here which he can’t at home and that meant he was even better in”
There was success at the course for AP McCoy, who possibly has only 6 Saturday’s to make his mark before retirement, and the Champ won two of the races on the card driving home Beg To Differ for Jonjo O’Neill and then faced an easier task on ready winner Definite Outcome for Rebecca Curtis.
