Gosden records one-two in Lancashire Oaks
John Gosden enjoyed a wonderful day at Haydock, with 8/1 shot Pomology leading home a one-two for the in form trainer in the Group 2 Lancashire Oaks under Graham Lee. Gosden was represented by two unbeaten fillies in the Haydock showpiece and they did not let down their trainer, with Sultanina following home her stablemate to fill the runner up spot.
It was a fantastic training performance from Gosden, as Pomology, a winner of all three starts last season, had not seen the track in just under a year but showed no ring rustiness staying on gamely to score by 2 1/4 lengths. Sultanina, also bringing an unbeaten record into the race having won at Salisbury on debut and a Group 3 at this track last time, also showed a great attitude, whilst last year’s Investec Oaks winner Talent stayed on well to finish third.
Gosden said: “She’s a nice filly, she hadn’t been working particularly well but it’s different on the track sometimes. The other filly found the ground a bit sticky for her, they were labouring in it a bit.”
Lee, enjoying his first Group 2 victory, added: “That was nice.
“I spoke to Mr Gosden earlier, he told me to ride her as I found her and if the ground was too soft not to be too hard on her on her first run back.
“She gave me a great ride, she kept it simple – she jumped, travelled and lengthened. It’s nice to sit on a horse of that calibre.”
