Grey Gatsby will bid to Eclipse Horn
The Grey Gatsby heads the challengers to Golden Horn this weekend in the Coral Eclipse at Sandown on Saturday.
Kevin Ryan’s stable star is a dual Group 1 winner at the trip and presents a stern test to John Gosden’s Derby winner who’s win at Epsom looks perhaps even stronger now with the placed horses behind him dominating the Irish Derby and stable mate Jack Hobbs, second at Epsom, winning at The Curragh in some style.
The Grey Gatsby was arguably unlucky not to win the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot when not getting the most straight forward of runs and finishing second to Dermot Weld’s Free Eagle. Jamie Spencer will ride once more and hope to get a better run in a small field for the feature.
“The Grey Gatsby has come out of Royal Ascot fantastically well, he had a nice breeze on Tuesday and is ready to go now it’s just been a case of keeping him ticking over. The course at Sandown should not be a problem. He’s a very well-balanced horse and he proved last time that he goes right-handed.” Adam Ryan.
“It’s going to be very hard work for him trying to give 11lb to Golden Horn, who looked very special in the Dante and even better in the Derby. To do that in any sort of race is tough enough, but to do that in a Group One against a horse that looks fairly special is a tough ask and it will probably take a career-best effort to beat him.
Cougar Mountain will run for Aidan O’Brien who has a super record in the race and the trainer reaches for blinkers for his runner this weekend and still searching for the ideal distance after a third place finish in the Queen Anne Stakes at the Royal Meeting.
The field of five includes Western Hymn, a second entry for John Gosden and outsider Tullius for Andrew Balding.
Stan James – Golden Horn 4/11, The Grey Gatsby 4/1, Cougar Mountain 11/1, Western Hymn 22/1, Tullius 100/1
