No More Heroes downs Shaneshill at Navan
Gordon Elliott’s No More Heroes got the better of the classy Shaneshill in a cracking renewal of the Grade 2 Navan Novice Hurdle. A two time bumper winner last season, No More Heroes got off the mark over hurdles at Punchestown on his reappearance and showed great battling qualities to down last season’s Irish Champion Bumper Shaneshill on his first Graded start.
Shaneshill was sent off the 4/9 favourite as he looked to emulate stablemates Boston Bob, Pont Alexandre and Briar Hill in winning the Grade 2 contest but, try as he might under Ruby Walsh, he couldn’t get the better of his rival in a terrific battle to the line.
Barry Geraghty had stepped in for the ride on Elliot’s charge and he quickly settled his mount in behind the leaders, with Shaneshill further back under a patient Walsh. The pair eventually came through to battle it out after the second last and it was No More Heroes that eventually found more to win by 1 3/4 lengths.
Elliott said of his winner: “I think he’s a very nice horse. Barry said they didn’t go fast enough for him, and he was a bit guessy at a few of them.
“I’m not sure where he’ll go next and Naas may come a bit quick for him.
“He’s a three-mile horse for Cheltenham and I’d be looking at the Albert Bartlett. He’s a real relaxed horse and does everything at his own pace.”
