Huge Galway Week for Mullins continues….

Willie Mullins made it a big seven on the week so far at the Ballybrit when Valyssa Monterg stayed on best from the last flight to win the Grade C Ladbrokes Handicap Hurdle at Galway under Ruby Walsh.

It was a 1-2 for the stable as long time leader Argentino held on for second behind the winner who was a reserve for the race but allowed a run when non runners were announced including Wood Briezh who would have been Ruby’s mount in the valuable contest.

The trainer was delighted to get a run but it was a surprise that the Ricci owned hurdler was able to score.

“It was a nice surprise as I was a afraid the ground may be too soft but with Ruby coming wide maybe he found nicer ground. Ruby felt she was far happier when he got out of the bunch as when she was on the inside he felt she wasn’t racing.”

“I was also delighted with Argentino – it was a chance spare ride for Mikey Fogarty and I never saw him jump as well. Both of them will improve and we’ll look to the next festival whether that’s at Killarney or Listowel. We could try Valyssa Monterg on the Flat at some stage.”

“It’s been a fantastic week and way beyond what I had hoped – I was just hoping I might get a winner or two!”

Dermot Weld’s week continued to frustrate with more short priced runners coming up short and he looks set to possibly relinquish the trainers title should that theme continue although with a points system in place he and Mullins will go to Sunday with all to play for on the final day of the Festival this year.
