Hughes and Manning head to Turkey
Kevin Manning will fly the flag for Ireland next week, when he represents his home country in the 7th International Jockeys Challenge, sponsored by the Turkish Jockey Club. The event will take place in Veliefendi Racecourse in the Turkish city of Istanbul next Wednesday the 15th July.
The challenge pits five top class local Turkish jockeys against five international riders in a four-race series, with a winning jockeys prize of €10,850. Manning will be joined by Richard Hughes who will represent Great Britain, Hall of Fame jockey Johnny Velazquez (America), Pierre-Charles Boudot (France) and Mirco Demuro (Italy). The legendary Halis Karatas, who emulated Frankie Dettori when going 7 for 7 in Veliefendi in 2012, will captain the home team.
Jockeys will be randomly assigned mounts in each of the four contest races, worth €73,800 in total, which will be broadcast live on TJK TV, the official racing broadcaster for the Turkish Jockey Club.
Manning, enjoying another highly successful season commented on the challenge saying, “I am delighted to be riding in Turkey next week, I’ve ridden at Veliefendi before and it’s a superb track with great competitive racing. I hope to travel back to Istanbul in September to ride in the TJK International Races, which offers excellent prize money and opportunities to overseas runners”.
