Irish Grand National – Reserves are back
This year sees the return of the Reserves system for the Easter Monday Boylesports Irish Grand National for the first time since 2011.
The feature of the Easter Festival at Fairyhouse which carries a prize pool of Euro 275,000 allows for a maximum field of thirty runners and the final declarations are due on Friday this week. Up to 10am then on Sunday the field can change to cater for any one of three reserves to be added to the field for the following day.
The Irish Times quoted Fairyhouse general manager Peter Roe “We had a reserve system in place once before, in 2011, but that was when problems with the track meant we were reduced to a maximum of 25 horses. The first reserve that year was Beautiful Sound who’d run well at Cheltenham and was the ante-post favourite but he didn’t get in and non runners only confirmed an hour before the race itself which made a mockery of the ante post betting”.
Regarding this year he explained “Should for any reason there be a non-runner over the weekend, reserves can be declared in their place up to 10am on Sunday morning.”
Current odds for the race – Gallant Oscar (11), Embracing Change (14), Grand Jesture (14), If In Doubt (14), Cause Of Causes (16), Champagne James (16), Lots Of Memories (16)in, Pass The Hat (16), Wounded Warrior (16), 20/1 Bar
