Jezki downs Hurricane to take Champion Hurdle
Jessica Harrington is enjoying a rich vein of form at the moment and she will head home an even happier woman this evening after her stable star Jeki again got the better of Hurricane Fly to take the Racing Post Champion Hurdle.
Jezki had beaten off Willie Mullins’ defending Champion in the Cheltenham version in March and again lined up against the World record breaking Grade 1 winner here, a race that the old warrior had won for the past four year’s and at a track that he had won at an incredible eight times.
Harrington’s charge though had shown at Cheltenham that he is well and truly the new kid on the block and backed that up with another impressive performance under A.P McCoy in the three runner race.
McCoy allowed the son of Milan to bowl along from the front to avoid any tactical problems in the small field and it proved to be a good decision as the 6yo enjoyed himself at the head of affairs, despite jumping to his left at times. Hurricane Fly tracked every movement of his younger rival but turning in it was apparent that the defending Champion was struggling to go with the strong travelling leader.
McCoy allowed his charge to quicken as they approached the final flight and despite again jumping left, landed running to come home a 3 1/4 length victor.
“It was a great training performance by Jessica and I’m delighted for JP too,” said McCoy afterwards.
“To be honest, he felt better than I’ve ever felt him, sometimes they get confidence from winning.
“It wasn’t ideal [being in front] because he has a tendency to jump to his left and it’s more exaggerated when he’s in front. But he was good.”
