Johnston 1-2 in Old Newton

Mark Johnston has his string in outstanding form and capatalised on that with a double handed hard fought finish to the Old Newton Cup at Haydock this afternoon.

The lesser fancied of the pair Notarised came home in front under a drive from Silvestre De Sousa with Joe Fanning having to settle for second on Watersmeet. Farquhar stayed on from the rear to finish third with the joint favourites Penhill and Battersea failing to get involved in the finish.

“He bounced out of the gates and travelled good, and for a horse that ran just a week ago, it’s a good effort. Mr Johnston has given me plenty of opportunities and I’m delighted to ride for him. I’m not really thinking about the jockeys title.

“I’m just trying to keep everybody pleased, especially everyone I’m riding for. I just want to keep the winners coming and keep rolling.”
