Joseph O’Brien to ride over hurdles

News breaking today that Joseph O’Brien will have a ride over hurdles this weekend at Limerick on Sunday, the same day that the flat season kicks into full gear at the Curragh.

One of the best jockeys on the flat over recent seasons and a career to date that has included wins in two Epsom Derby’s and a Breeders Cup it has long been known that given his height, managing the weight is difficult for the jockey and he has been quoted previously as considering riding over timber in the future. “I’m just a little heavy at the moment but I will be back riding on the flat very soon” O’Brien told the Racing Post today.

He will ride Egyptian Warrior for his father Aidan O’Brien in a novice hurdle on the card for owner JP McManus and many eyes will be on the partnership whilst Ryan Moore, Ana O’Brien and Donnacha O’Brien take the rides at the Curragh on the same day.

Hopefully he will make a quick start to his dip into National Hunt riding but with the likes of 2000 Guineas fanices Gleneagles and John F Kennedy, well touted for the Investec Derby this Summer, it could well be a short stint which quickly ends in pursuit of further classic glory this season.
