Kiyoshi back to form with Sceptre win
Kiyoshi has proved to be both quirky and classy in equal measure in the past, but Charlie Hills’ filly was in the latter category today, running out a gallant winner of the Group 3 Sceptre Stakes at Doncaster. A Group 3 winner as a juvenile and disqualified when finishing second in the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh, Kiyoshi had shown little since returning this season, with her best effort coming when 2nd in the Listed Valiant Stakes at Ascot two starts ago.
She was back to her best today, however, eventually getting her head in front in the dying stages to win by 1 1/4 lengths in what was a very high quality Group 3 contest. 15/8 favourite Bragging was having her first start in Group company for Sir Michael Stoute and could only manage second, with Al Thakira back in third.
Hills said: “She is very good indeed, but she was a sick filly in the spring and had to have two months of antibiotics.
“She did a piece of work last week that was really special, quite breathtaking, and it looked like she had her old spark back inside her. We had the cheekpieces on then, so we left them on.
“It’s not a definite, but the obvious place to go with her would be the Sun Chariot.”
