Lucida lands Group 2 Rockfel
Jim Bolger’s Lucida landed the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket, putting herself forward as a big Guineas contender next year in the process. Carrying the famous all blue colours of Godolphin, Lucida made the most of a drop in class to run out a game winner of the seven furlong contest.
Having gone very close in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes last time, Bolger’s charge was sent off a warm evens favourite and despite a few worrying moments at halfway, she did not let backers down as she found plenty on the rising ground to charge home a 1 length winner.
For a brief moment Lucida looked to be struggling as the field kicked for home but once jockey Kevin Manning got her into a rhythm, she found more and more. She would win going away from 10/1 shot Fadhayyil, with New Providence (5/1) back in third.
The winner was cut from 14/1 to 10/1 for next year’s 1000 Guineas in the aftermath.
Winning trainer Bolger said: “It was only 12 days since her last race and you couldn’t be sure, but she has always been quite a hardy filly.
“I was always happy enough in the race itself as she has a very relaxed style of racing and although Kevin had to niggle her along a little bit, I knew she’d pick up when she hit the rising ground.”
Manning added: “She changed legs once or twice down the hill, but once she got organised about the ground she was fine. She’s a filly on the up and will stay further.”
