Makin Master At York on Carpenter
A huge day for Phillip Makin at York this afternoon with a huge four timer topped by landing the 56th John Smiths Cup aboard Rod Millman trained Master Carpenter at 14/1.
Long time leader Kelinni was worn down towards the line by the strong drive of Makin who got the fiver year old to the front and stayed on with relish to the line to land the feature, Mount Logan in third for Luca Cumani and Forgotten Hero was back in fourth place with Ajman Bridge, another for Cumani and sent off 5/1f close behind in fifth place.
Master Carpenter was a Group 3 winner in France in his early years but had been coming back to form and relished today’s contest and it’s a big win for connections. Assistant trainer James Millman was ecstatic following the win.
“He’s run a cracker and it’s a brilliant result after quite a disappointing season. Phil has given him a cracking ride.”
Phillip Makin had the perfect trip during the race. “We had a nice draw in stall one, I didn’t have to use any petrol and he travelled great.”
Makin was aboard Out Do 4/1f for David O’Meara to land the 2.55pm and also on Birdman for O’Meara who took the 1.45pm at 7/1 but fittingly the four timer was brought up with Dark Defender in the finale for regular boss Keith Dalgliesh 7/1.
