Marcel Marvel in RP Trophy
The Group 1 Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster was a shock result this afternoon as outsider of the field Marcel stormed clear to give Peter Chapple-Hyam a second winner of the race and Andrea Atzeni a third on the bounce after he steered Kingston Hill and Elm Park to wins in 2013 and 2014.
The race was set up as a match between prominent 2016 Derby hopes Foundation and Deauville but neither landed a blow as Marcel went clear with only Johannes Vermeer for company at the finish.
Frankie Dettori found traffic problems on Foundation but did push out for a third place finish whilst Deauville was well placed to challenge but failed to go through with a meaningful effort at the 2f pole.
Winning trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam wasn’t overly surprised….
“I thought we’d placed, but maybe not beating John Gosden’s horse. He’s a big horse, taken time to come together. His work was really good coming in to the race. Let’s hope ( he could repeat previous winner Authorized ) and let’s go forward. I’d say he is more of a French Derby horse, he’s still only a baby.”
Third time on bounce for winning jockey Atzeni “When I pulled him out, he put the race to bed in a couple of strides. He’s a very laid-back horse, who gave me a lovely ride. Peter knows how to win a big race and this is great.”
