Maria Amazing Again

David O’Meara is proving a magician in the training ranks and the Group 1 Qipco Falmouth Stakes can now be added to his ever impressive cv as Amazing Maria steered a straight course to win under James Doyle and proved a shock, big priced success at Royal Ascot, was no fluke.

A 25-1 winner of the Duke of Cambridge Stakes at the Royal Meeting the rejuvented Sir Robert Ogden owned charge stormed home at 17/2 to land the Group 1 contest against some much vaunted opposition.

Waited with before bursting past long time pace setter Euro Charline in the final furlong and Marco Botti’s charge could find no more having to settle for second at the line.

Lucida for Jim Bolger and Kevin Manning has had a luckless season this term with narrow defeats in the 1000 Guineas and then a Royal Ascot and the trend continued here as the gap refused to open up for Manning and a late rally could only muster 6th place for the 2/1f.

Possibly the biggest moment of O’Meara’s training career to date. “She’s confirmed that she’s a proper filly. She’s a nice big type and travelling well today. She moved into a position to strike quite easily and found plenty.”

Of the second Euro Charline trainer Marco Botti was happy to see her back on track and running well.

“In hindsight she’d have got some cover as she likes to be behind horses but Andrea said there was no pace and I think he did well to relax her.”
