Martin’s Quick Jack heads Cesarewitch market
The versatile Quick Jack is very popular at the head of the market for next weekend’s Betfred Cesarewitch at Newmarket, as he attempts to give shrewd trainer Tony Martin a second victory in the coveted 2m 2f handicap. Leg Spinner provided Martin with victory in the valuable contest in 2007 and the trainer is confident that Quick Jack, a winner at the Galway Festival last time, may be just as good if not better.
The Footstepsinthesand gelding has won three of his nine starts on the level and, showing his versatility, has also scored twice over hurdles including at Cheltenham last November. He was installed as favourite for this weekend’s Newmarket highlight and with the money still coming for the 5yo, bookmakers shortened him to as low as 6/1, with his nearest rival, Ray Ward, double the price at twelves.
Supporters will have been glad to hear Martin describing his charge as being ‘in good form’ yesterday, when he joined Donn McClean on his maiden ‘The Weekend That Was’ show on RacingFM.
Martin said: “I’m quite happy with him. We gave him a nice break after Galway, he has put on a nice bit of weight and he is back in work a good month now and I am quite happy with the way he is.
“He is a horse we only inherited last year and we had to get to know him. He doesn’t carry a lot of weight and we thought we would spare him as much as we could and not over-race him. It’s seems to be working, so we will keep doing what we are doing.”
