McCoy Bows Out
It didn’t end in a victory but AP McCoy bowed out at Sandown this afternoon a Champion once more and got the final send off worthy of his great career as the crowds packed out the racecourse and clapped and cheered his every move.
Box Office for Jonjo O’Neill and JP McManus was the final ride for the Champ and finished in third place, whilst a third place finish was also managed aboard Mr Mole in the AP McCoy Celebration Chase earlier on the card for McManus and trainer Paul Nicholls.
A tearful McCoy saluted the crowds on his way in to the parade ring for the last time and with family and friends in pursuit took all the reaction in before the mob of the crowds made their way to get once last glimpse of him in the famous green and gold silks.
“It’s amazing. I’ve been so lucky all my life. I’ll never forget this day. It’s been a very emotional day and thanks to everyone for coming, it’s fantastic, it’s very special.” AP McCoy.
Trainer of Box Office and a man who has played a huge part in McCoy’s career Jonjo O’Neill saw the humour in not winning this time “The way he rode that, he’ll never ride for me again!! He’s the greatest man in the game. He’s good to work with, a true professional. What I can say does not justify how great he is. We will not see the like of him again.”
Brother Tedd took the race under Richard Johnson “It’s a sad day. He’s been one of my best friends for a long time. It’s great to ride a winner but it’s an amazing day for him, he’s the one we should look at today. I couldn’t sit next to a better fellow. Twenty years of good memories and we will still be friends for a long time.”
