Mecca’s Angel Clips Acapulco’s Wings
The fifth fastest running of the Nunthorpe in history was taken by Mecca’s Angel for jockey Paul Mulrennan and trainer Michael Dodds with the well backed Acapulco denied in second after leading them all for a long way in the Group 1 sprint.
It’s been a game of patience for connections having removed Mecca’s Angel from a couple of engagements during the season on account of the ground but that has been rewarded in no uncertain terms here.
A delay to the start may have effected a number of runners as Take Cover broke cover and galloped saddle and riderless away from the start and was withdrawn so when they finally got under way it was Acapulco who blazed along in front and looked uncatchable with a furlong to go but Mecca’s Angel came through and won well at the finish with Mattmu a good third in behind.
Dodds was celebrating afterwards and was full of praise for the ride and the patient owner.
“We’ve been lucky because David is the most patient owner and allowed us to say if the ground isn’t right we won’t run. Fair play to everyone involved, we walked the track and we were happy, she’d have preferred even more rain. She’s a serious horse, she’s shown what she can do and it’s been worth the wait.”
“Acapulco gave us a real good run for my money, but this filly is so good when she gets a tow into the race. That’s my first Group One winner and to do it at York is special. It’s great for Michael, too. It’s very special to do it here, it’s our local track and we’ve told people all year how good she is. She’s proved today she’s the real deal when she can get her toe in.” Paul Mulrennan
“I think my filly would stay six furlongs. I’ve just said to Michael it’s a pity the July Cup is in the summer because if there’s any juice in the ground that’s the race for her. Because the American horse had such a low weight I didn’t want to give her too much rope.
“To do it here, the place I lost my claim, and for Michael, who has been a big supporter, is extra special.”
