Murder takes advantage of Maarek flop

Scream Blue Murder was a surprise winner of the Group 3 Phoenix Sprint Stakes on a wet and wild day at the Curragh, coming home a 20/1 winner under Pat Smullen for trainer Tommy Stack. Evens favourite Maarek flopped badly on his return from a break for trainer Evanna McCutcheon.

Given the testing conditions under foot, Maarek was expected to make light work of his rivals on ground to suit but became under pressure halfway through the 6 furlong contest and was never a danger under a frustrated Declan McDonogh. Eventual winner Scream Blue Murder, had disappointed in two starts on good to firm ground of late but a return to testing conditions seen the daughter of Oratorio bounce back to her best to record this surprise 3/4 length victory.

The David Marnane trained Jamsie finished better than any to finish a closing 2nd with British raider Hamza, who had made all the running just a head back in third. Disappointing favourite Maarek eventually finished an eased down fifth.

Winning trainer Stack said afterwards: “That was a bit of a surprise but she does like the ground. She toughed it out well.

“She’s a Group Three winner now to go along with her Listed win, so anything from now on is a bonus.

“She’ll probably come back here for the Renaissance Stakes and we could look at the Flying Five. We’ll probably draw stumps with her at the end of the season.”
