Navan: Troytown triumph for Balbriggan
Gordon Elliott’s Balbriggan landed a huge gamble to take the valuable Troytown Chase under a confident ride from Kevin Sexton. Backed in from 14/1 in the morning to 4/1 before the off, the striking grey had plenty of money on his back but not so much weight.
Carrying just 9st 12lbs, the 7yo, a winner at Sedgefield over hurdles last time, made all the running under the in form Sexton to record a 1 3/4 length from Omega Star, with 2011 winner Groody Hill staying on for third and Back Off Mate back in fourth.
“It was easy enough to fancy him off a light weight,” Sexton said afterwards. “He was loving it all in front. His ears were pricked and he was winging his fences. He loves galloping and he handles soft ground.”
Elliott, who was recording a double on the day following Free Expression’s Grade 2 Monksfield Novice Hurdle victory earlier in the day, added: “We gave a good few quid for him but he’s paid his way now. He ran at Sedgefield because the lads (owners) were going to be there and we had a great day out.
“I couldn’t believe the price he was. He’s in all the staying chases like the Becher and the Paddy Power.
“He’d a nice light weight on his back and Kevin jumped him out and made use of it. He gave him a fine ride.”
