The New One will be given Haydock trial

Leading Champion Hurdle hope, The New One, will continue his preparation for Cheltenham with a run in Haydock’s Champion Hurdle Trial this weekend – that is if the meeting survives the forecast bad weather. It is an interesting choice by trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies to run last year’s big race third on what is likely to be bottomless ground on the lead up to Cheltenham but he is keen to get another run into his stable star before heading to the festival.

The hard-luck story of last year’s Champion Hurdle, The New One retained his unbeaten run this season with an impressive performance in the International Hurdle last time and will be looking to continue that trend in Saturday’s Grade 2 which has been re-opened due to a small entry.

Twiston-Davies sent his charge to Cheltenham without a run after Christmas last year and would surely have gotten closer to winner Jezki but for being hampered by the ill-fated Our Conor. The trainer is obviously keen to keep the fitness levels up on the 7yo this season but ante-post backers must be a little worried by his participation in testing ground this Saturday.

Twiston-Davies confirmed the decision to run by saying: “It is still our intention to take him to Haydock this weekend.

“If the meeting is on, he will run.”
