Oisin Murphy lands first Classic
After breaking on the scene over the past two seasons it was a huge day for young Oisin Murphy as he dotted up aboard Karpino in the German 2000 Guineas this afternoon for German trainer Andreas Wohler in Cologne.
The unbeaten Pearl Bloodstock charge came through to lead in the straight and under Murphy went clear to win well and deliver a first classic victory for 19 year old pilot. Having had a golden summer in 2013 predominatnly for Andrew Balding the jockey then headed to Australia for more experience and has sinc been given a big vote of confidence landing a role with Qatar Racing and Pearl Bloodstock along with main retainer Andrea Atzeni.
Second in race was Frankie Dettori aboard Marco Botti’s Fanciful Angel but the German Derby looks next on the card for the winner. Irish raider Cappella Sansevero finished down the pack for Ger Lyons and Colin Keane after a troubled passage and could never get involved.
Trainer Wohler reported following the victory in the Racing Post. “It’s most likely the German Derby will now be next on his programme but he is entered in every big race. He definitely stays and all the big mile and a half races will be options.”
