Orange Shocks Newmarket
Jamie Spencer ridden Big Orange caused a huge shock at Newmarket this afternoon taking the Group 2 Princess of Wales’s Arqana Racing Club Stakes for trainer Michael Bell at a whopping 25/1 sp.
It was a forward move from the front employed by Spencer that set the cat amongst the pigeons and whils the rivals were queing up behind Spencer had saved a little for a further burst to repel them in the finish. Bookmakers rejoiced as the 25/1 shot held off Luca Cumani’s Second Step in second and Gospel Choir in third.
Mahsoob stepped up to Group company was sent off a 5/2f but faded and finished back in 6th place.
Spencer seemed confident afterwards that he had saved enough before the finish and was delighted to be proved correct. “We went a nice even gallop and stepped it up from the five and he kept stretching and stretching. Ryan came to me but didn’t get away and only went a head or a neck up. We were in good shape then because I hadn’t gone for everything and he knuckled down well in the final furlong.”
A big winner for trainer Michael Bell – “He was in great form. The cheekpieces just helped him dropping back in trip. It was a very good ride from a very good jockey. The modern word is ‘fractions’ and he got them spot on. Mr Gredley lives locally and we decided to run him at the July meeting as he loves to have runners here.
“This was a nice surprise. He’d get a penalty in the Goodwood Cup, so where he will go next I don’t know. I’d love to go to Melbourne with him one day, but that’s another conversation.”
