Quest gives More in the Plate
Roger Charlton’s much improved Quest For More provided jockey George Baker with further big race succes in the last turf running of the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle this afternoon as the 15/2 chance came home in front and found plenty in the finish to hold off Willie Mullins’ Sempre Medici in second.
Wokingham winning jockey Baker settled his mount almost to sleep in behind the pace for the early stages and then bided time for a gap at the two furlong pole to move to the front and start the run for home. Quest For More responded gamely and provided both Charlton and Baker with their first success in the feature at the northern venue.
Baker was delighted “He has really stepped up on the form he showed last year and he has improved a good amount. It is not an easy task to win a race like this he was just doing enough when he hit the front.
“You have got to think he could build again from this. Normally this is such a rough race but I had an untroubled passage and it just opened up for me.”
Clever Cookie was declared a non runner in the build up to post time having been well suported over night and will now look to at possible trips to France in search of suitable contests on easier ground.
