Route to Galway starts at Roscommon
Roscommon Racecourse will host the first of four Galway Plate trials with thetote.com Connaught National Handicap Chase on Monday 8th June. Each of thetote.com sponsored series winners will gain free entry to the €220,000 thetote.com Galway Plate on Wednesday 29th July.
Unbeaten chaser Horendus Hulabaloo currently heads the entries for thetote.com Connaught National. The Mouse Morris-trained Gigginstown House Stud-owned gelding has made a fantastic start to his chasing career winning both starts with ease including a 24 length winning performance at Listowel last time. Gigginstown House Stud has five entries in total and Ravished is another on a hat-trick after winning performances at both Kilbeggan and Killarney. Their entry is completed by Band Of Blood, Rogue Angel and Bishops Road.
Champion trainer Willie Mullins relies on Urano as his sole entry while Gordon Elliott has three engaged, headed by Punchestown Festival third Bless The Wings. Leavethelighton and Seefood, second and third respectively in the Mayo National at Ballinrobe last time look set to take each other on again. Leading owner J.P. McManus has a four-strong team led by Speckled Wood and recent winner Down Under.
Noel Meade, trainer of last year’s thetote.com Galway Plate winner Road To Riches, has three entered, the most interesting of which is Tom Horn, second in last year’s Munster National, who looks likely to have Galway on his agenda.
Tote Ireland CEO Tim Higgins said: “The Connaught National is a highlight of the season at Roscommon Racecourse and Tote Ireland are very pleased to be associated with the race. We are very pleased with the quality of entries for the first of our Galway Plate trials and hope that the winning connections will be availing of our free entry offer to thetote.com Galway Plate.”
