Ruby’s return is Sceaux good

Un De Sceaux retained his unbeaten record in France earlier today, leaving Ruby Walsh with little to do on his return to race riding.

Willie Mullins’ 6yo was a double bumper winner in France before joining up with his current trainer last year and having made a fantastic start to his career in Ireland, returned to France last month to get the better of French Champion Hurdle winner Gemix. Having decided to swerve a run in either the Cheltenham Champion Hurdle and the Irish Champion Hurdle, Mullins again sent his all conquering charge back to his native land to make it nine wins from nine starts under Walsh.

The returning jockey quickly sent the strong galloping 11/10 favourite to the front at Auteuil and the pair would never see another horse as they easily quickened away in the heavy ground to cruise home a 2 1/2 winner from Le Grand Duce.  Gemix was again in opposition but having never being able to get involved, eventually finished a disappointing fourth.

Decisions on whether the unbeaten Denham Red gelding would line out again this season are still to be discussed, as Mullins confirmed afterwards:

“It was a good performance as the ground is very testing and he was staying on well at the end.

“I don’t have anything else in mind for him at this stage, but we’ll have a look at the French calendar when we get home. I don’t think there is anything in Ireland or England for him, so if he is to run again it will probably be in France.

“He doesn’t need another run. He’s had a great season already and we’re not particularly anxious to run him again – unless an opportunity presents itself.”
