Sammy Jo Bell lights up Shergar Cup
She may not have taken part in the finale at Ascot today for the Shergar Cup but a double on the card was enough to top a memorable day for Sammy Jo Bell who picked up the Silver Saddle leading rider award this afternoon.
The Girls Team won the team event after wins for Emma-Jayne Wilson and placed efforts from Hayley Turner secured the prize with Jamie Spencer picking up two smart wins for the Great Britain and Ireland team and Kerrin McEvoy was strong in the saddle to land the first race for the Rest Of The World.
The final standings – The Girls 80, GB and Ire 67, Rest Of The World 66, Europe 27 and Sammy Jo Bell topping the riders table with 35pts, Jamie Spencer and Kerrin McEvoy 30pts each in second place.
The winning rider was a late call up for Cathy Gannon and couldn’t believe her luck. “It’s amazing, I’m gutted for Cathy but delighted to have the opportunity.”
The three pound claimer, based with Richard Fahey faced up against some of the worlds best riders and this will be the biggest day of her career to date by some way.
Only started riding in the UK as recently as 2013 with her first rides coming in Ireland in 2010, her boss Richard Fahey was proud, using twitter to pass on his public congratulations. “Just incredible. Sammy Jo Bell wins the silver saddle at the Shergar Cup & the girls win overall for the first time”.
