Shalaa strong second string
Shalaa may have been the longer in the betting for owners Al Shaqab Racing but she proved well up to the task in Group 2 company landing the Arqana July Stakes under Rab Havlin for John Gosden.
It was an impressive performance to step up from a low key success at Newmarket last time out. Although regular listeners to RacingFM may not have been surprised as the colt was subject of a serious mention when we spoke to Racing Manager Harry Herbert earlier in the season on RacingFM – click here.
“He travelled with a lot of ease through the race and it was just a question of pressing the button. When he stopped quickening he started idling but there was a bit left in the tank.” Rab Havlin winning jockey.
Winning trainer John Gosden was not surprised “The Richmond Stakes is next. We avoided the Coventry because he showed a nervous nature last time at Newmarket. We’ve given him every chance and I’ve brought him down here a few times to school and he’s learning. He’s always been our fastest two-year-old.”
Areen was sent off co favoruite of three along with Steady Pace and Eltezam and all failed to land a telling blow in the contest.
The winner will now be considered for Classic tilts next season with layers going around the 20/1 mark for the 2000 Guineas.
