Simple Verse team awarded St Leger
The first time in a Brittish Classic that a horse wins, is disqualifed and then awarded the race in an appeal happened today as the result for the 2015 St Leger was amended again and Simple Verse awarded the Classic at an appeal hearing this afternoon.
Having finished first past the post at Doncaster and then demoted by the stewards enquiry that followed, it was this afternoon that the respective legal teams had their say in front of a BHA panel and the result was amended to the delight of Qatar Racing, jockey Andrea Atzeni and trainer Ralph Beckett. Bondi Beach who was awarded the race on the day at Doncaster will now lose the Classic and connections will hope for more luck with future engagements.
Panel chairman Tim Charlton reviewed all evidence presented “As a result we change the decision of the stewards at Doncaster and place Simple Verse first and Bondi Beach second.”
Trainer Ralph Beckett said: “To have it taken away on the day was horrendous. There are only five Classics. It was a big call by us to supplement in the first place. To get it back is terrific but to get it back like this is not how you want it.I have been lucky enough to win three Classics but I am never going to think about it in the way I do about the two Oaks wins.”
Aidan O’Brien’s response “I am delighted for Ralph Beckett and Sheik Fahad on his first British Classic Win, we felt we had a fair hearing and some you win and some you lose. Colm lost a classic, but I’m sure he will get more, some days work for you and some against.”
