Solow takes Royal Ascot in stride
French raider Solow used his impressive stride to bound clear and hold off all challengers in the opening battle of this year’s Royal Ascot 2015 in strong looking Queen Anne Stakes.
Under leading French jockey Maxine Guyon who celebrated with gusto at the line the Freddy Head trained superstar held off the finish of fellow French runner Esoterique with fast finishing Cougar Mountain grabbing third for Ireland and Aidan O’Brien. Night Of Thunder looked to deliver a telling blow with a couple of furlongs to go but the effort petered out whilst Hong Kong challenger Able Friend never got competitive.
Winning pilot Guyon and trainer Head were delighted “It’s amazing, just before the race we were wondering if he could win, but today he was the boss. “He’s a beautiful horse, lovely to train and is everything you want – he’s the number one. He was a bit done for speed, but then after 100 yards he strode out.”
Of Cougar Mountain Aidan O”Brien will consider options now “He ran very well. Our horse was coming home very well and we’re delighted with his run.
Able Friend’s trainer John Moore just felt the occasion was the issue “The aura of the whole thing got to him, but I’m sure he’ll be ok and we’ll be looking to come back here with something else.”
