Sprinter faces five in Clarence House

The mighty Sprinter Sacre will line up against a maximum five rivals on his return to action in the Sodexo Clarence House Chase at Ascot on Saturday but forecast heavy rain has thrown doubt over the participation of Nicky Henderson’s superstar. Henderson had stated that he would not like to run the former Champion Chase winner on heavy ground on his return and that may well be the case with plenty of adverse weather around for the coming week.

Henderson’s charge was among six rivals in this morning’s entry stage for the Grade 1 contest but fans will have to hope and pray for some good weather before they can get excited about seeing the 9yo back in action after over a year out.

Among possible opponents on Saturday could be stablemate French Opera who was last seen going close at Wetherby over Christmas. Tingle Creek winner, Dodging Bullets looks like the main danger for four time winning trainer Paul Nicholls and he will be joined by 2012 winner Somersby who was just 2 1/2 lengths behind him at Sandown.

Twinlight, who bounced back to form in the Paddy Power Dial-A-Bet Chase at Leopardstown last time, is the sole Irish raider for Willie Mullins, with Richard Lee’s Grey Gold completing the sextet of entries.
