Thistle Bird out to record back-to-back Oaks Day victories

The rain is set to leave Epsom alone for another while at least and the opener on Oaks day looks primed to see Thistle Bird land a second Group 3. Roger Charlton’s 6-year-old mare was disappointing when 6-lengths behind Ambivalent in sixth place at York three weeks ago but was too keen on that occasion and also ran like one who would improve for the outing, which is hardly surprising given the yard she’s in.

She was behind Mango Diva and Odeliz there but today’s event is over two-furlongs shorter and that should be enough to see the form overturned. Epsom won’t phase Thistle Bird either as she took this exact race last term on her second outing of that season and seemed to have little problem in handling the quirks of this venue when doing so. At a best-priced 3/1 (Ladbrokes), she’s not a terrible shout in my book.

The only real worry I have is over Just The Judge, as that one is a classy operator based on what she was showing in the opening part of last term and as a 4-year-old, might have more to offer in due course. However, Charles Hills’ charge was a tad disappointing in the Earl Of Sefton on her seasonal reappearance at Newmarket and has something to prove for now. As such, it’s Thistle Bird who gets the nod.
