Thunder strikes in Lockinge
Night Of Thunder led home an impressive one two for trainer Richard Hannon by holding off Toormore in tight finish to this afternoon’s Group 1 Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes at Newbury.
James Doyle gave the winner the perfect ride, ideally positioned throughout and getting first break on his challengers, last years 2000 Guineas winner was able to repel them up the straight and it was his stable mate Toormore who got closest at the line under Richard Hughes, going down by only a neck and finishing in front of third placed Arod.
Doyle was encouraged by this start to the season for the now Godolphin owned charge. “There should be more to come as that was just the start of his campaign. He went to win his race and settled it nicely. I’m delighted. It’s great to put on these silks and hopefully there will be plenty more to come.”
Winning trainer Hannon could not have enjoyed the result more!
“I’m delighted. Toormore has run a super race and Night Of Thunder looked to me like he was going to win very well and got tired, as he’s had a long time off the track. I couldn’t be more pleased. I think both of them will improve. Definitely, Toormore will. He was a bit heavy and doesn’t do too much at home.
“Night Of Thunder won the Guineas and the Lockinge. He’s obviously a very good horse and will make a very good stallion. They will probably both go to Ascot for the Queen Anne.”
The afternoon belonged to Ryan Moore however, despite missing out on a victory in the Lockinge ( finishing just out of the places on Integral ), the jockey dominated proceedings with a five timer which for his loyal followers paid a whopping 1,962/1!! Wins on Birchwood, Telescope, Adaay, Time Test and Crystal Zvezda showed all of his skills in the saddle on a remarkable afternoon for the pilot.
