Thurles: Vroum Vroum Mag motors to Grade 2 victory

Just thirty minutes after seeing the disappointment of Champagne Fever’s last fence fall, connections’ moods were lifted with the sight of their exciting mare, Vroum Vroum Mag saunter to success in the Grade 2 Mares Novice Chase. Another impressive French Import to the Willie Mullins stable, Vroum Vroum Mag had made an impressive start to life under her new trainer with victories at Wexford and Cork and was under no duress to make it three from three in Ireland in today’s 2m 4f contest.

Sent off the 1/2 favourite, the 6yo travelled well throughout and eventually hit the front before three out still full of running. Jennies Jewel looked like the only danger from this stage but she was well beaten when falling at the last, allowing Vroum Vroum Mag clear to score by an effortless 26 lengths.

The winner holds entries in the Racing Post Arkle, the OLBG Mares’ Hurdle and the JLT Novices Chase at Cheltenham and was cut to 10/1 from 12’s for the latter in the aftermath.

Ruby Walsh said of the winner: “I gave her a kick at the fourth and third last and probably shouldn’t have because I left myself very long at the second last.

“She’s just nudged the top of it, but she’s so much horse and got her two front feet out really quick.”
