Today’s Action: Liberty the One to be on at Cheltenham

1.05 CHELTENHAM: SHLOER CONDITIONAL JOCKEYS´ HANDICAP CHASE (Jockey Club Grassroots Jumps Series Qualifier)

The second race on what is a fantastic card at Cheltenham today brings out the conditional jockeys for what looks on paper to be a pretty open eleven runner contest.

Current favourite Gallery Exhibition is a worthy market leader following his impressive win at Catterick last time, for which he receives a seven pound penalty to burden today. That eased down win was over three mile plus and this drop in trip is far from sure to suit and he may struggle to give weight away to all.

Another who would surely like more of a stamina test is the consistent, if a little frustrating, Hollow Blue Sky. Nigel Twiston-Davies’ charge always seems to run a game race but struggles to get his head in front and connections seem to be struggling to find an optimum trip for their 7yo.

One that should be suited by both trip and ground today should be Liberty One, who has so far failed to flatter in two chase starts. A three time Point to Point winner, Richard Woollacott’s charge won two of his three starts over timber last season but always shaped like jumping fences would be the making of him.

It surprises me that he has yet to register in his two chase starts but his run at Newbury last time could prove to better than it looks on paper. He travelled very well into the race that day under Noel Fehily but made a complete mes of the third last and could never get going again afterwards. At the prices he could prove to be a little bit of value.

Last year’s fourth Al Alfa must also be considered now fit from two starts this season, whilst Simply Wings has dropped to a workable mark again and must be respected for a bang in form trainer who recorded a treble yesterday.
